Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional (ICI) Sheet Metal Apprenticeship
An ICI apprenticeship is typically 9000 hours, spread out over 1800 hours per level of apprenticeship, for a total of approximately 5 years. The majority of the learning during this apprenticeship is done on-the-job, where journeypersons will teach apprentices how to perform standard tasks. The rest of the learning is done in school, where three 8-week long day school programs are required to prepare apprentices to take their Certificate of Qualification Exam. These day school programs take place throughout the 5 years of work. The apprenticeship program also requires supplementary night school training lessons to be taken before completion of the apprenticeship.
How to Get Started
In order to become a sheet metal apprentice, you must have the following qualifications:
- A minimum of an Ontario Grade 12 Secondary School Diploma or equivalent. Those without an Ontario Diploma should contact us to see about other educational options or requirements. We can assist with finding a place to get this education if you do not have it.
- Must be 18 years of age or have a parent or guardian approve the Apprentice Agreement.
As with most construction jobs, this trade requires heavy manual labour and therefore may not be possible for someone with a severe physical disability. Should you believe you may require accommodations, please contact us for more information.
We, the Local Apprenticeship Committee, will be your group sponsor and will guide you through your apprenticeship. Contact us at 613-237-1491, or info@mcaottawa.com to start an application to become an apprentice.
