MCA Ottawa Steps Up to Help the Vulnerable
MCA Ottawa is proud to announce that we are the new exclusive naming partners for The Ottawa Mission’s Stepping Stones Learning Centre.
A high school diploma is something many of us take for granted. Imagine not having one and then trying to find employment. When the Ottawa Mission approached MCA Ottawa Board of Directors, they told us about a Toronto shelter study that found that 64% of shelter users did not complete high school verses 34% for all Canadians.
We are inspired by the transformative support The Mission provides for the vulnerable in our community, trying to better their lives through education. Access to education provides people who are at-risk or experiencing homelessness with unique opportunities to overcome homelessness once and for all. Some of the barriers to education include housing instability, health conditions and learning disabilities, inadequate nutrition and lack of transportation.
The MCA Ottawa Stepping Stones Learning Centre is a small classroom with a big heart; students work one-on-one with a teacher and with dedicated volunteers on various learning goals, which include: high school completion, non-credit literacy and numeracy upgrading, ESL and FSL training, computer training, and post-secondary studies.
Our gift of $100,000 to support the MCA Ottawa Stepping Stones Learning Centre will help ensure that the most vulnerable in our community have access to educational support to help them change their lives for the better.
Charles Kettering, a famous inventor, said, “The greatest thing one generation can do for the next is to lay stepping-stones.” MCA Ottawa is not providing a hand-out, but a hand-up and laying a Stepping Stone towards education for the next decade by partnering with the Ottawa Mission.
We can’t wait to see what will be accomplished!
BTW-The van “Powered by MCA Ottawa” is pretty cool too! Watch for it around Ottawa.
